| no partners | | If you are going to make the long drive out to this park, plan enough time to hike this trail. In my opinion, this is the best trail in the San Tan Mountain Regional Park. The mountains in the southern section of the park are beautiful. It's torture that the park does not have trails that lead the summit of at least one of these mountains. It wouldn't surprise me if many folks have started trekking up anyway, despite the park rules. This is the only trail in the park I felt worthy of a 3 rating.
The hike to the Malpais junction combined with the 4.2 mile length of the trail make this a lengthy trip. In addition, much of the hike along the base of the mountains is in a sandy wash that is sure to take it's toll on your legs after 2+ miles. Be sure to wear good hiking boots to give proper support and keep sand out.
Another thing that would be nice is for the park to add benches, or even better, campsites, out on the far reaches of this trail. A night under the stars with the mountains looming above would be a treat. When I reached the southwestern-most part of the trail I was eager to stop and eat my lunch. I had to hike off trail a bit to find a nice place to sit and enjoy the scenery thanks the lack of a picnic table. There, surrounded by cool air, soaring hawks, and towering mountains, I sank my teeth into some fine beef jerky....mmmmmmm. |
