| no partners | | The third trip to Humphrey's Peak was the best. On the first trip I had rain, fog and light snow at times but no views. On the second trip there were high winds and I had to hold on to not get blown off the mountains. But on this trip I had full sunshine with some clouds and almost no wind. These are only some of the many moods Mount Humphrey that you can expect on any visit there.
Much more snow on the trails than I was expecting. Almost none for the first 1.2 miles but I would guesstimate that I hiked through more than 2 miles of snow at the lower elevations. Once at the saddle the ridgeline trip to the summit was snow free. I would guess that the north facing Weatherford trail is nasty at this time.
About 6 hikers reached the summit this day and about 6 more hiked to the saddle or turned around before the summit. Following the trail was challenging but I had a GPS track to keep me there and I used it in many situations. Several hikers found themselves off trail but managed to summit via one or another straight up route which can be done there without much trouble.
I lugged a large new Olympus E-PL1 with a sizeable 9 to 18mm lens (for wide angle shooting). Some of the shots in the picture set were taken at 9mm (18mm in 35mm equivalency). |
