| no partners | | Hiked up the South Fork trail from the campground to Mexican Hay Lake. Then the adventure began, as I looped down Joe Baca Draw below the lake's dam. It is pretty much bushwhacking, although there is an intermittent old trail, probably left over from when they used to run cattle down that way.
Jose Baca was this area's first settler, as I recall. He came over from New Mexico. He has a lot of descendents in this area.
The bushwhacking was accompanied by a short rainstorm. I was glad I had brought my zip-off pant legs. I zipped them on. Then I was further glad when there were a lot of thorny rose and berry bushes I had to wade through!
There is a little creek running through Joe Baca Draw. A nice backpacking trip would be to start at the South Fork campground and hike upstream to the draw, then hike up the draw less than a mile. Nice flat area in there. |
