| partners | | We planned to hike Wheeler Peak via the standard route (Bull of the Woods Trail) but Sun_Hiker discovered the Williams Lake approach while chatting with a local hiker. So happily we went that way doing an 11 mile shuttle hike where we got a 2 mile ride back to our car at the Williams Lake TH. Thinking back on the hike I would definitely prefer this route.
After reaching the peak in about 3.5 miles (doing a 2,000 foot climb in 1.5 miles from the lake) we hiked about 7.5 miles to the Bull of the Woods TH. The 7.5 mile stretch is over a lot of ridgeline with magnificent views but fully exposed to possible lightning storms. So you want to have a good weather day to minimize the threat. Thankfully we had a great weather day so that was not a problem.
Wheeler is the highest summit in New Mexico so we get to carve another notch in our hiking poles. A great hike. |
