| partners | | Twas a cloudy rainy day in the far off land near Flagstaff AZ when Hank and I arrived just before noon at the Kachina TH. Braving the elements we decided to hike in spite of the sight of lightning and the loud thunder not too far from us. We are not afraid of no stinking lightning and thunder and rain. Bring it on, it won't even slow us down (of course we are already slow and don't need help with that).
Turns out we only got about 1/2 inch in about 1.5 hours of rain and just 5 miles away the Shultz tank area got 3.5 inches in about 4 hours causing flash floods and 1 death of a young girl who was swept away by the flood waters.
The Kachina trail is in perfect shape with no fire damage at all. It is an amazing trail filled with mega numbers of Aspen as well as Pine and above all else, ferns - miles and miles of ferns. I've been on lots of trails with ferns but none with the amount or density of ferns on this trail. Personally I would rank Kachina as one of the most beautiful hikes in Arizona. Thoroughly enjoyed this re-visit to one of my favorites. |
