Hank invited me on a Christmas hike to his treasured getaway. How could I resist! I've wanted to go here for some time. What I had pictured in my mind and what I actually experienced were two very different things. So many locations truly must be seen in person. A photo can never capture the 360 effect. It is so cool to stand on that butte and take in the surrounding area. This is a special place and I now know why Hank loves it so much. Looking across the upper ridgeline towards the towering east edge is absolutely amazing.

I wanted to experience everything that Byous Butte had to offer. While hiking along the backside, I couldn't help but notice some very manageable gullies leading up to multiple saddles along the top. I just had to see those views! I left Hank along the primary route and headed straight up towards a small saddle below the main tower. The route is a little sketchy near the top, but still a manageable scramble. The payoff was shocking. This spot is not for the faint of heart. I carefully climbed up a small rock slope to peek between two boulders. My jaw hit the ground and it was immediately apparent just how high up I was. Wow is this cool!! I could see Hank out on the far west edge and was able to grab a quick shot looking across the upper ridgeline. He looked so small out there.

I climbed down from my perch and headed cross-slope along the backside towards the saddle that Hank was on. I personally really liked the middle bench along the way and I will add that it's much safer and easier to reach. This butte is a playground and I was having so much fun. I finally reached the far west saddle and was able to look back at my cliff-top perch. Dang, what view! This really is a cool place!

If I sound somewhat melodramatic in my triplogs, it's only because of the passion I have for exploring. I really do live for this stuff. Byous Butte is exactly what I love. Truly a hidden gem! Thanks for the invite, Hank!
