While there I visited Cape Disappointment State Park. It was rainy and foggy but I kinda felt that added to the experience. It is the Pacific Northwest after all.
I hiked from the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center to Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. It's downhill on a dirt trail, then uphill on a paved path. While walking through the forest I came across a chipmunk, two deer and a snake. Who knew there were snakes in Washington?
Going uphill I could hear a very large ship in the distance. WHen I finally reached a clearing I peered through the dense fog. I could barely make out a massive freighter making its way out of the Columbia and into the Pacific. Then the lighthouse came into view. It's the oldest lighthouse in Washington and it too was shrouded in fog. Unfortunately, it's closed, but there is still a watchmen stationed up there guarding the entrance to the Columbia. What a job that must be!
I don't have an exact figure but I'm estimating this at about 1.2 miles round trip from the Interpretive Center to the Lighthouse. |
