| no partners | | We started in the middle section of the trail (approx. a half mile northwest of the artesian spring at Walnut Canyon, next to Battle Axe Butte) and hiked upstream for just a couple of miles. The trail started as a cow trail but quickly disappeared. We ended up following the canyon bottom, where the rock is washed smooth and white, and enjoyed the many pools of water. Water was running steadily in most places but was easy to avoid, though some pools were deep enough to swim. We saw a couple of turtles and a frog in the pools. One section of this canyon was blocked by a series of huge boulders, beginning at about a half mile up from the southern end. The lack of a trail and these big boulders made the difficulty high for some of our party. -saw lots of signs of javelina and two of us saw evidence of a cougar when we climbed a side canyon. |
