What a great trip! The morning was almost too still with no wind, but there was a mild breeze when we reached the top after 2 hours of enjoyable hiking. The burned trees were sad to see but it made it a lot easier to look across canyon. We spent an hour on the summit where we saw a horny toad, a scorpion under the rock I was about to sit on, and the shell of an irridescent green beetle with silver stripes.

At 11:00am it was almost 90 degrees on the summit, so to get in a bit more hiking we returned to the Mazatzal Divide Trail and went northward, -just to enjoy the trees and coolness. That's where we met a black tailed rattlesnake crossing the trail, and a variety of birds. Besides these natives' sounds, nothing else could be heard. To be in such a large space and hear absolutely nothing was a rare treat for two city dwellers.

For our first trip to this particular wilderness, we were very impressed. The trail was well laid-out to maintain a level elevation, and clearly maintained. We wished we could put in a few more miles but the clouds were building for a monsoon storm and we cut it short. We returned to the trailhead just in time to beat some sudden strong winds, and a clap of thunder which seemed to toll the hour exactly (2:00pm).

Afterthought: I wonder if it's time to build a trail all the way to the summit?
