I'm on vacation, heading up to Boston from New York, and it's raining cats and dogs. When it finally stops I need to get out of the car and stretch. A quick scan of the map reveals there's a state park at the next exit. Impromptu side trip!

Turns out the park has a little bit of history. It's on land once owned by the Connecticut colony's first governor back in the 1640's. In the late 1800's it passed through the hands of Caleb Haley, who the park is named after. He built low-rising stone walls throughout the park which are still there today. In 1970 it was converted to a state park.

Today, you can tour it free of charge. There's some ruins located at the park entrance and plenty of great walking trails. In warmer weather this looks like a good spot for birding as there is forest, meadows and coastal wetlands to explore for wildlife. On this trip I spotted cardinals, robins, red-winged blackbirds and a woodpecker. Unfortunately, timing is everything and my pics aren't the greatest.

This isn't an imperative, must-see place, but if your vacationing in the nearby beach town of Mystic (as in Pizza or Seaport) it makes a wonderful little side excursion.
