By the time I got out of church and headed up the Apache Trail the clouds over the Superstitions had started to lift. Underneath, it revealed a beautiful blanket of fresh snow. Traffic was slow going up the Trail so I decided to pull over at the Superstition Mountain Museum and snap some photos before the sun broke and the snow started to disappear.
Once I was done at the SMM I continued up the Trail. I stopped at the Needle Vista Viewpoint to see if Weaver's Needle had any snow covering. Indeed it did! That's a sight I have never seen before. I grabbed my camera and scrambled up to the top of the hill to take pictures. That's when a dark cloud moved in and it started to snow on me! Actually, it may have been more of a sleet than a pure snow, but pretty cool regardless.
Finally, it was on to the hike. I parked at mm206.7 a proceeded down into Willow Creek. I followed the contour of the creek to an area with some trickling slick-rock waterfalls. Then I beelined it up to the saddle between 2881 and its neighbor to the east. I pushed my way up to the flat summit for some spectacular views of the snow-covered Supes, Weaver's Needle, Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake. While sitting on the summit it very briefly started to snow again. This time the sun was out so it was like a mini snow-sunshower. Definitely a memorable experience. |
