It was a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze and the trail was full of hikers, mostly young people and families. I'd say right off that this hike might not be for you if you have a fear of heights, don't like rocky trails, and don't care for stream crossings. The first part of the trail was easy and wide, can't get lost for this is the only trail to the falls. We wound up making 7 creek crossings and with the water low, we were able to rockhop and not get our feet wet. Towards the end it started getting rockier and steeper until we finally arrived at the falls where the trail is WAY up from the bottom. Spectacular views and the time to get the camera out. From there you have to descend down onto the rocks to get to the falls and pools. Well worth the ending to a beautiful hike. Most people had packed a lunch and were sitting down by the falls enjoying their meal. We saw lots of leafing trees, mainly cottonwoods. The ocotillos were just starting to give off their orange blossoms. All along the way you're treated to fields of saguaros, chollas, prickly pears, palo verdes, and mesquites. Some itty bitty blue and white flowers were starting to peek out but nothing really going on in the wildflower department. The Sabino Canyon tram takes to to and fro the trailhead which was wonderful. Active mountain lion sightings were posted but with so many people using this trail, I didn't worry about it....too much. I used "My Tracks" on my Droid and posted the hike with waypoints on Google maps. |
