My first Humphrey's ascent was a success. Arizona's highest peak...bagged! My friend Joe and I met up with Jake, Dustin, Brian and Daisy. Started our hike about 7:15am. I had barely made it across the meadow and already my lungs were getting a work out. Thought I might be in trouble early, but concentrated on slow deep breaths and soon found myself somewhat acclimated and back in control.

Jake and I led the group out to the bomber wreck. This was a worthy sidetrip, although every step across the boulder field is a potential ankle-cranker. After visiting the crash site, we headed back towards the trail where we met up with Preston and Chapman. From here, the trail got steeper and with more switchbacks. The higher we climbed, the less vocal our group became. At 12000 feet it seemed like talking would only be a waste of breath.

We arrived at the summit at 12 noon and took a 40 minute break before heading back down. This is where we parted ways with the rest of the group. Let me just say right here, that it was my pleasure to meet some of the familiar personalities on HAZ. Felt like I knew some of you already, and it was good to shake a few hands and get to know you all out on the trail.

Did I mention the wind yet? At times, there were "knock you on your butt" wind gusts and I was frequently sandblasted in the face with dirt kicked up by other hikers. I was happy to get down into the tree line and out of the high winds.

At about 10,000 feet, an older hiker (maybe mid 60's), hooked his boot on a jutting rock and he dropped to the ground. Joe and I were right there. The hiker thought he had hit his head. Sure enough, when he lifted his hat, there was a 1/2" gash in his forehead. He sat up and I held him stable, while a few other hikers offered medical supplies. Joe cleaned the wound and affixed a butterfly strip to the cut. Covered the wound with gauze and taped it up. There were 3-4 different hikers who all contributed with supplies. Good people. The hiker said he felt alright afterwards and was comfortable to continue down the mountain.

Joe and I arrived back at the trailhead at 3:20pm. Before leaving Flagstaff, we stopped at Diablo Burger, on Brian's recommendation, and headed back to the valley.

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.
