| no partners | | Hiked up Humphreys with my Buddy Drew via the Inner Basin to escape the Phoenix heat. Upon arriving we discovered the road was closed to the trailhead due to last year's fire. We parked at the gate and hiked it on up the road to Lockett Meadow which was just beautiful. Then came the Inner Basin with all its amazing Aspen Trees. I actually felt like I was back in my home State of Colorado for a brief moment.
On up we went and I got a little laugh as I saw "HAZ" in small stones on the side of a snow drift. Hmmm, Joe must have been through recently. We actually saw his sign in at the Registry as well.
As we worked our way on up the IB trail towards the Weatherford it began to get a little steeper and I could sense Drew was slowing a bit. No worries as he is just getting into doing some longer hikes and prior to this his longest was up to the Flatiron (6 miles RT).
Working across the Weatherford we hit a nice long patch of snow that took a little effort to cross so as not to take an unpleasant slide. After that it was all smooth sailing until we approached the Summit where the winds were SUPER strong. Just prior to the top we ran into Joe and Bruce which was really cool because I had never met either in person.
Up to the top and then back down we went. We had a friend coming up to meet us for some Sunday hiking so we went down the Humphreys Trail side and had him meet us at Snowbowl. We arrived 5 minutes before he got there from his drive up from Phoenix. Great Weather, Great Hike, Great People! |
