I plotted a "Short Cut" drive, on some little used Forrest Roads, to get us from SR 180/Slate Mountain, over to Rt 64 heading towards Williams. I even got to see the route of the AT&T Transatlantic Cable out in the middle of nowhere on the way.
OK...so we are at the TH to Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21, within 5 minutes of my planned start.
Joe is rustling from hibernating for 30 minutes.
Only 8 miles and 2,500 feet or so to go to complete the trifecta for the day.
Joe's batteries are charged, mine are drained.
The first two miles of this hike are just so-so for me. After that, the woods get thicker, the Aspens appear, and you finally loose the I-40 noise. Once at the top, the 360 views again were mind boggling.
After watching the engagement ceremony at the top (See Joe's Triplog), I spent some time in the fire tower with Ranger Don. Joe once again napped.
With Hike 3 of 3 in the books .... All in all a fun day...
360 miles of driving,
16 miles of hiking...
Good company,
good hiking,
Great friggin State!!!! |
