Out the door at 1:45am, on the trail at 5:50am, done hiking after 7:30, home just before midnight?
It was 6 miles to get from Grandview TH to Tonto, including Cruise Director Wally's, 3 different side trips of 1.5 miles. (.2 looking at mines and mine eqpt, .6 for the Cave of the Domes. .7 for a walk on a Mesa). The top of this trail is steep, narrow and loose in spots. Perfect for hiking half asleep and in the dark.
After coming down the Mesa the trek to meet the Tonto, was the worst part of the hike for me. Steep and loose, with 14 pounds of water, it's makes for rubbery knees.
Next comes the Tonto Trail.
Phrase of the day while on the Tonto. "I think the SK trail is just over that next rise".
21 miles later... it finally was. Don't get me wrong, there were some beautiful views, but the dam thing never ended!
Dead tired, 26.5 miles in so far, it's time for the Death Slog up 3100 feet and 4 miles of breathing powdery, stinky, pumice like dust to get to the top.
For those coming through next month, water was found on the Tonto where it crosses Cottonwood Creek, A Spring at the East Side of Grapevine Canyon, and where Tonto crosses Grapevine Creek.
None rushing or roaring, but all wet and clear (hint... go up stream of the dead animal for the grapevine east side spring)
A huge thanks to Denny and Wally for driving.
Always a blast with this group of numb sculls! |
