Did this canyon today with Pam (Outdoor Lover) and Danila (a friend). Arrived at the TH and there was no one else there until 5 mins later when another hiker showed up, never saw her again. I previously hiked this canyon in '04, '05 and '06 when it was lush and beautiful. Now there is lots of deadfall and tree scarring from a fire that went through the area~~~not sure when that happened~~~possibly 2007? The deadfall makes the trail slow going and at times you really have to look to find the trail, especially in the upper reaches. Thankfully there are still blazes on some of the trees and others have built rock cairns in sketchier sections. I stopped at one spot and Danila and Pam continued on. After waiting for 1 1/2 hours I started to get concerned and started up the trail looking for them. Found Danila about 1/2 mile up the trail and Pam had continued on...appearing about 10 mins later. I think they just wanted to make me climb that big hill! We saw no one else all day until we were almost back at the TH. I struggled a little on this hike. Probably a combination of the elevation and the fact I really haven't been out for several months due to my torn ankle tendons earlier this year. The foliage that was out there on the surviving trees and regrowth was just about peaked so that didn't disappoint. Had a blast though and I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I did today with this group. Perfect day with temps in the 70's. Stopped at Mackey's in Payson for really good "Verde Cheeseburgers". The drive back up Bush Highway was marked by all the dead little soldiers presumably taken out by all the partiers on their way back from Saguaro Lake. :sl:
