| no partners | | Bruce and Joe had done this hike late last year. It caught my eye as I love this area. I decided to give the new Garmin Fenix a go and fly by technology. This is difficult for me as I am not use trusting a device. I loaded Joes route and off I went. I got started a tad before 10am. The weather was perfect, and a group of 30 boy scouts were sounding off as I left the trailhead. Up Derrick to the Highline, then east to See Canyon. Once at the river it was difficult to cross due to the volume of water coming down. I worked my way up the bank and finally found a spot. Then I came to a junction for See Spring. I decided to check it out. I am not sure if I actually saw the spring or not as there was water flowing everywhere. I turned back and continued following Joes route up the canyon. Then came the snow, and more snow and then some more snow. I was knee deep in the stuff. This made for a slow go and my feet were starting to freeze.
Up on top of the rim I saw 7 elk. More snow travel. The GPS route was working perfectly. I love it! Then I made my way to the edge of Promontory Butte and signed into the register. I took a starburst that someone put in there. I did however leave the dollar bill.
Then it was down that crazy Promontory Trail. This would be my third time on it. Man am I glad that didn't have snow on it. It's a steep trip down that one.
Finally, I hiked the Highline back to the Horton and then headed out. Except for the snow this hike was AWESOME! Thanks Bruce for creating the route! It's a winner! |
