It was pouring rain around MT Ord, but it cleared up as we hit the 188/87 intersection. As we parked the sun was poking in and out. There was a rainbow with a snow capped mountain behind it. It reminded me of the old Saxon song "Frozen Rainbow". We headed it.
There was snow on ground at 5,300 feet and the ground was covered in snow at 5,700. We could see blue sky behind us but there was a dark cloud sitting at the pass. As exited the canyon, the snow was 2 to 3 inches deep and it started to snow on us. Along the way I had to clear a bunch of dead fall from the trail. There were a couple of times where the trail was blocked by fallen vegetation. I had to wacked the wet/heavy snow from the plants and they stood up and allowed us to pass.
The visibility was very bad. At times we could only see about 500 feet. The clouds were hanging very low and the wind was strong. At times I couldn't tell if it was snowing or the wind blowing the snow around. I was glad I brought my waterproof boots, but I forgot the rain pants. My legs were soaked from brushing against all of the snow covered plants. Fan's shoes got wet. We turned around at the Mazatzal divide intersection. This was not fun anymore. Both of us were cold and the clouds looked darker. The return trip went a lot better because I cleared path of dead fall and snow covered plants.
As we got near the canyon, the snow had melted from the trail. We could see the sun shining on the bee-line. We looked behind us and saw that black cloud still lingering. We had lunch at the TH and unloaded the extra water into the jeep.
We now headed down the Half-moon trail. When the trail crossed a jeep rod, we hopped on the road. We followed it another un-marked road. This road dropped us into a wash that was very close to the Half-moon / Rock Creek intersection. We followed the creek for a bit, then bushed wacked to the Rock Creek road. I went north to the Rock Creek TH and then returned. We hiked on the Rock Creek road to another un-named road and then looped back to the first road. Along the way the sun poked out once or twice on us. As we hit the TH, we saw that clouds had finally started to clear out from the mountains.
All of the creeks were flowing from the rain / snowmelt. We had more fun hiking below snow line. |
