| partners | | Last week I checkout the new passage 16 of the AZT and this week I hiked the new and improved passage 17.
I've been hiking this passage for about three years now and it's changed dramatically over the years. The original AZT was 80% jeep roads and washes. Now it's 99% quality trail.
Fan and I started out at the Picket Post TH. There were half dozen vehicles in the lot when we started. What's strange is that we didn't see a single person on the trail.
There are small wooden stakes every quarter mile counting down the mileage to passage 16.
We made it to passage 16 with enough time for my second objective: scope out a route to Martinez canyon!
Fan took an extended break as I went down the trail looking for an ideal route down to the creek bed. I also keep on trying to see if there were any obstacles like drop-offs in the creek bed. I saw a couple of spots that had some promise. At the end of the day I decided to drop down from the corral (near the start of the canyon) into the creek. It was further away from Martinez canyon, but it was an easy descent. There was a washed out spring box in the creek.
We then headed back. The only person we saw for the day was a hunter by the Telegraph road. At the trailhead there was a bunch of people setting up telescopes. |
