I decided that I needed to do something big today. Today, I was celebrating the fact that I still had exactly a year before I hit the milestone age of 50. ;) This seemed like the hike to do just that....

I decided that I needed to post 2 Trip Logs on this trek as I decided to do a little side trip that turned into a much bigger one. It was an adventure all by itself. Plus it allowed me to split up the pics as I took almost 200. Don't worry, I weeded out a few... :D Taking pictures is challenging as I only have a small "Point & Shoot". Someday I'll have a good camera again....

I have to include these notes because of all the HAZers that told me that it would be no big deal to do Flatiron for the first time, solo, as there would be alot of people around. :) Apparently none of you guys have done this hike on a Thursday... :sl: People totals are as follows: 8 People that I saw on the way up. 2 were on their way down from a backpack trip, 1 only went to the Waterfall area, 2 behind me that I think must have given up, 1 that was doing his "daily workout hike". (A note on this guy. His legs looked like he could do 1000 lbs on a Leg Press machine. And his timing catching up to me was perfect as I was almost up top and had the 2 most difficult areas left. His "tree to the left" suggestion, was extremely helpful....) And 2 Visitors, who had never done this hike, but were the only 2 people of 8 that were going my direction and that had the Flatiron plateau as their destination. When I got to the top, I ran into 5 other people up top at some time or another and that was it. All told, 16 people in 11 hours....And only 5 people at the top, all day...I had this place to myself! :y:

Very tough hike, but incredibly fun with lots of diversity! This hike had it all, especially with the "side" trip...Hiking, tons of scrambling, a little climbing, traversing, and I was even swinging from a tree.:GB: The Route Finding on the way up wasn't hard, as there was enough Red, White and Blue paint to cover the State Capitol... And if you couldn't see any, it really wasn't too tough to figure out and there were places that if you didn't know to hike the drainage all of the way up, you really didn't have any choice anyway, as the canyon closed in pretty tight.

I knew that when I got up there, that I would be spending alot of time, taking pictures and exploring. I guess I'm the type that feels that if you are going to do something that hard, you want to take the time to enjoy the destination. :budrose: And enjoy it I did! Beautiful views, Solitude, lol, and even ecological diversity in a small area. Loved this hike and will do it again someday. Got to see the Sunrise and Sunset views. Couldn't ask for a better Birthday hike this year. Now to plan something Grand for my 50th.... :GB:
