Hiked down South Kaibab and finally got to see the river up close and personal. I was going to leave the camera behind, but Jeff insisted I take it, so he carried it and we both forgot it was there. :? Go figure. So it wasn't until we were hiking out the next day that we remembered that there was a camera.. and by then it was basically dark. We hiked down to Cottonwood and set up camp under a picnic table. It was coooold and pretty windy, and there was rain and snow forecast (depending on what your elevation was). We thought about checking out the North Rim but after reaching the pumphouse decided to turn back. There was a blizzard going on at the South Rim, so figured it was best to get out earlier than later. By the time we reached Phantom Ranch the weather was pretty much gorgeous. We got intermittent showers on the way out, and then went up the long Bright Angel, three miles of which was snow. Thankfully it was really fresh, and not many people or animals had been on it, so it was really easy to walk without crampons. The previous weekend I'd hiked on it, and the last three miles were basically ice! Doable, but not preferable. We got out pretty late, and were welcomed by single digit weather. I'm glad I keep three ice scrapers in my car or we'd have never gotten anywhere. :) Chose to hotel it instead of camp (we'd car camped inside the Subi the night before heading down); a bed was a nice change from the cold ground, and you just can't beat a hot shower. But again, can't wait to go back.. :)
