19 mins from trailhead to Ooh Aah, 13 mins from Ooh Aah to Cedar Ridge.
Saw a bunch of Trail Crew kids on their way up from working in the blazing sun above C.R. They all looked beat, and a few looked like they were really suffering ... heard a small group trying to inspire a girl back to her feet with promises of sunset and campfire, and good food.
Explored the fun rock ridge that extends from the signed area ... smelled cat pee, and saw two Condors flying - I could see that they were tagged, but couldn't make out numbers - darn it!
Heard some guys - not regular backpackers, I don't think - pass by on their way down with overnight packs ... I don't think they ever knew I was there, but I heard a funny snippet:
Guy 1: what the hell is that? (he is referring to the hitching post)
Guy 2: well, it's gotta be a guard rail. (he sounds like he believes it)
Guy 1: I can think of alot of places I'd rather have it! (good point, since there is absolutely no exposure here - you could do cartwheels)
Guy 2: yeah, but there is alot of slippery gravel here...
My thermometer showed 90 degrees in the sun out on the ridge.
I arrived back up at Ooh Ahh to find two small groups there, but neither of them were in the shady spot with the primo view - I never understand why people rest in the sun when it's hot - so naturally I claimed it. Barely got settled when a rude family showed up and crowded me out of my spot - and ruined the peace and quiet by yelling at their kid.
Kept up a pretty good pace to the top ...
Enjoyed a rainbow on the shuttle ride back to the visitor's center, stopped at my store to pick up a couple S.N. Pale Ales, said hi to the deer on the way home ... and here we are! |
