This one was REALLY cool. Right from the beginning hiking down the slot of volcanic rock toward the Colorado river. Just a really neat place with tons of visual interest. As I made my way down the wash my shoes slowly collected sand. By the time I reached the river it felt like I could fill a sand box. There were quite a few people out hiking, canoeing, and camping in the area. Once I made my way up to the actual Hot Springs I was surprised to see them completely full of people.
I had read that there were big horned sheep in the area. So for the return trip I decided to attempt an off trail in hopes of seeing some. I went up one of the side canyons and started heading East. I didn't see any but did see some interesting rock formations along the way. The travel isn't too bad as there isn't much bushwhack. Towards the end I tripped on a rock and smacked my left knee really hard. That part was no bueno, but otherwise I am glad I took a trail less traveled.
Just before reaching the Highway there were a bunch of old canisters in the canyon. At first I thought someone was using them for target practice but that wasn't the case. There must be at least a hundred of them scattered around. They are very old and say Hercules on the top. Maybe large oil cans from the building of the Hoover Dam era? Not sure? Once at the road proper I had come out about a mile South of where I started. I hiked up the side of the road and back to the car.
This would conclude my giant loop road trip for the two days. I ended up driving a total of 1177 miles to do these 5 hikes. Along the way I saw a lot of really cool stuff and had a great time! |
