Day Two Hike for of Road Trippin/Hike Journey. Mount Trumbull.

From Marble Canyon it is about 75 miles to Fredonia, from there to Mount Trumbull is about 58 miles down a dirt road. I have heard and read horror stories about this road. I came prepared with new BFG All Terrains on the Jeep but no need. Much to my surprise the road is in excellent shape. I don't know if it was recently graded or what but my average speed of travel on that road was in the 50 mph range.

It was a beautiful morning and a little crisp out but nice. Upon reaching the trailhead I changed shoes and put on my Camelback. Don't ask me why but I left the Jeep running while I was getting ready. Then somehow I made a total bonehead move and shut the driver's door. Guess what?!? The key is now locked inside the car and the car is running. I am miles from the nearest anything! The idea of breaking the window came to mind but what a mess that would be. Then I grabbed a hold of the top of the door and pulled on it. I was able to get it to pry away enough to insert a tree branch. All I would need is a long something to reach the electric lock. There it was right in front of me. The Trail Marker! I worked it out of the ground and presto the door was open! Whew! Pounded the marker back in to its place and off I went with a sigh of relief.

Much of the trail and terrain is volcanic rock and soft brown dirt which was nice. As I gained elevation I started to come into patches of snow that hadn't melted. This made trail finding a bit difficult but proved helpful later. The last mile to the summit is not maintained by BLM but there are random cairns to help guide the way.

Up top I found the Geodic survey marker and a pyramid of rocks but no register. The book says there is one but I didn't see it.

On the way back down my tracks in the snow made for easy route finding. There is plenty to explore in the area and on my next visit I would like to check out Mount Logan if time permits.

Next stop Arizona Hot Springs, after a long drive through the beautiful Arizona Strip, past the Virgin Mountains, past Las Vegas, and over the new Bridge at the Hoover Dam.
