| no partners | | The weather report was showing Tuesday as the last day of good Supes hiking temperatures for the foreseeable future, so I just couldn't turn it down. Between having the sun coming up earlier and my having a little difficulty forcing myself out of bed, I didn't get the hike started until it was light at 6:30am. The thermometer in the car showed the temperature to be 32 degrees at First Water TH. There was snow on all the upper elevations. Just about perfect for a hike.
In light of my goal of trying to hit a new area/trail on every hike I decided to head over to Battleship Mountain. I took Second Water to Boulder Canyon down to the Battleship Mountain trail. I guess it must be age, not too far above the lower alcove I decided that this hike didn't feel comfortable alone. A few years ago I doubt that would have stopped me.
From the height I was at I did have a great view of the lower LaBarge box, so I headed down to the saddle and then continued down to the box. WOW! It was a fantastic place. The recent rains had left some good sized ponds and small waterfalls. The sheer rock walls were breathtaking. They looked to reach the sky but I guess are really about 400 feet tall. Still very impressive. The place looked right out of a Tolkien book. Cool echo also. There was a hawk that frequently screeched as it flew over the canyon. Erie sound. I spent a good half hour just wandering around admiring this canyon and taking pictures. At the south end there was so much water that I couldn't get to the huge boulders without getting much more than feet wet. So I ended up exiting the same way I came in.
Back in Boulder Canyon I continued south to the Dutchman's and back to First Water. 20 some years ago I remember taking a short trail that bypassed Parker Pass. I figured that today was a good day to find this alternate trail that I had always called the Parker Pass Bypass. After a bit of searching I did locate the bypass. |
