Last time doing this loop we missed Calvary trail thereby missing Marsh Valley, so it's been on my list to do the complete hike. The Calvary trail is one Supe's trail that I hadn't seen before. Outdoor Lover had this hike on her wish list so I requested being allowed to accompany her.

The day started about 6:30AM at the First Water TH. A little cool but nice. The sky was showing just enough to promise a clear day. Second Water and Boulder trails were the usual. Very little water flowing in Boulder creek, never a problem to cross (and recross and recross). Kept a close eye on the GPS to make sure that we didn't miss Calvary trail. Glad we didn't miss it, the scenery is beautiful. Malapais Mountain really dominates much of the views, but they are great views all around. Then Black Mountain is quite a sight. We ate lunch in Marsh Valley next to a very "colorful" section of water.

The loop around Black Top Mesa provided more great views. Palomino Mountain with the sun behind it was stunning with it's tans and reds. Aylor's arch really showed with the bright blue sky and afternoon light. Actually the entire hike had great views. What more can you ask for?

We saw 2 backpackers just after getting back on the Dutchman's after Marsh Valley. Other than that the only other people seen were 2 hikers about 100 feet from the parking lot. We had expected to see many more at least on the Dutchman's between Aylors Camp and the TH. The day ended about 4:30PM.

Saw a few Indian Paintbrush and even less Poppies, that was it for wildflowers. Very little wildlife either. Outdoor Lover spotted a cardinal and I found a red tailed hawk, but that was about it. We are going to regret this dry winter.
