Following our last visit to the old Pinal City, we found it interesting enough to return for more exploring. This time we brought along the ATV's so we could cover more of the area.

We parked the trucks at the Superior Air Strip, and unloaded the ATV's. Once everything was secured, we headed off following Service Road 989 which parallels the South side of the air strip. The roads around here can require a high clearance vehicle as there are washes to cross and an occasional mud hole to ford.

There are a lot of fiberglass marker posts planted around the area and some people we met told us that the numbers on the markers indicated a building once stood at this location. The numbers can be cross referenced to a map of the original Pinal City with a description of the building. Now I have to get one of those maps.

We searched around the area of the concrete foundation that we visited last week and before long we located a cement lined well going down approximately 20 feet with no water at the bottom. A little bit farther we found a horizontal shaft dug into the side of a wash. This didn't look like a mine so we assumed that it was for food storage. The ceiling of this shaft has collapsed at the farthest end and a hole breaks the surface. Be careful as there are no warning signs and a child could easily fall into the openings.

We left the area and drove up to the Apache Tears diggings and got some more of those shiny black stones, then followed some Jeep/ATV trails following the ridges above Arnett Creek. The cliffs are very vertical with some awesome views of the creek far below. The trees along the creek are very green so there must be a source of water present. This area is on our future hit list of places to visit, it really looks fun and interesting.

This was a lot of fun, we would drive for a while, see something interesting, park the ATV's and hike around the area to see what we could see. The area down by Queen Creek offers several flat, shaded camping opportunities, complete with fire rings. There was one 24 foot camper parked down there for a couple of days of exploring, rest and some quiet time.

The Ocotillo and the Hedgehog are coming into full bloom along with a smattering of Mexican Poppies and the rest of the yellow blooming plants. It's a beautiful time to be out in the desert.

Once back at the trailers, we loaded up the ATV's and headed back to Apache Junction. Doug and I stopped at the corral and windmill along the road to Picketpost Trailhead, where a couple of cowboys were finishing up their work and about to load their horses. We stopped and talked with them for a short time about the old rock corral across the wash and behind the windmill. They said the corral dated back to the days when Pinal City was active and was used by the cavalry to prevent the Apache's from running off with the horses and cattle.

There's a natural spring below the windmill so the old stone corral is still in use. The walls in some places are falling down, but it's mostly still intact. The next time you're in the area, hike across the wash behind the windmill and visit this 150 year old relic of the old West, you're sure to enjoy it.
