Unlike the thousands who take the challenge of climbing this peak, I decided to instead proceed in a clockwise fashion around the base of the mountain. At the same time I was exposed to some local area history [http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5269665.pdf], remembrances of a time when my kids could visit the Apache Tears Mine, and fantastic views of the canyons and crevices which are all-too-often lost in the assault upon the peak itself. I was also glad that I had chosen long-legged pants (highly recommended) once I had entered into the confines and thickets of Telegraph Canyon. The pup didn't mind but I would not recommend this section of the hike to 4-legged friends (extend your route through Arnett Creek and onto Telegraph Canyon Road as an alternate). Todays was also my first glimpse this season of fully blossomed Mexican Golden Poppies...yikes is the summer heat already soon around the corner? |
