| | | Nice hike with 3 Johns, Berk, Bob, Brian, Preston, Steve, Dennis, and Ebba.
The Y-Bar/Shake Tree Trail is in good shape right now and will probably improve as a trail crew is currently working in the area. It still has some downed trees in one section but its easy to navigate. The off-trail part up to Mazatzal Peak was steep and required some wading through manzanita and a few short climbs but was otherwise not too bad. The views from the top were decent. We were able to spot Flat Iron to the south and Humphreys Peak and Williams Mountain to the north. Our return route took us down the drainage to the west of Suicide Ridge. We bypassed a large waterfall (maybe 75') about midway through the drainage by taking an obvious route on creek-left (by this time we had split up into groups of two).
My favorite part of the hike was the section of creek after the midway falls. Lots of smaller falls, short downclimbs, catwalking on downed trees, and just trying to stay dry. Bob and I really hauled buns (TM Uphill Junkie) through that section. Bob moved like a ninja jumping from rock to tree and back while avoiding the water! I just did what I could to keep up!
Not much wildlife during the hike but we did see 2 deer on the road while heading back to the highway. Thanks for driving, Bob! And thanks Preston for the granola bar! |
