| partners | | Finally got up on the top of the Estrellas via Quartz Peak. Like Four Peaks, the Superstition Ridgeline, and Camelback the Estrellas are something you see anytime you drive around the valley. The hike up gains a lot of elevation, but nothing too steep. Much of the trail reminded me of the San Juan (west) side of the Alta trail. We made it to the white clad peak in good time (1:15). It didn't take long to decide we were going off trail south to Butterfly Mountain. Getting to the top of the high point of Butterfly requires climbing and some exposure. Going up isn't so bad, its the dangling your feet over the edge while laying on your belly trying to find a blind foot hold coming down part that bothered me. I told John that I would help him get down then consider going up. John was able to descend without losing his life, so up I went. Next thing I know John is up top again to join me. Views from the top, like Quartz are excellent. We could hear a troop of Boy Scouts on Quartz Peak shouting in unison. Sounded like a bunch of Aussies. The hike back down to the trailhead is fun if you like rock hopping. Great day to be out hiking. Thanks John for the idea and offering to drive. |
