There are some stellar hikes in this area of Capitol Reef Park, the Muley Twist canyons, on down Hall Creek Narrows and up the short slots in the Water Pocket fold. I decided I would stop and hike in Sheets Gulch. I had been in Burro before. They're working on the road on that stretch so had to park off the main and walk up the wide wash where as before you could drive up in the wash a little bit. Sheets is supposed to be the least spectacular of several of these little canyon hikes, but I think it depends on what you are looking for and expect. I like the buff colored sandstone greened up with little bushes and trees growing out of it, the weird concretions in the stone sometimes. This canyon was very nice and had a little variety, several narrows of different types, a couple of easy chokestones, some petrified wood, basaltic boulders and a large jug handle arch. And of course the domes and big walls of the water pocket fold, unique and inspiring in the flow and mounding of the sandstone. I was kinda feeling "off my feed" as my grandmother would say, not very energetic with an ominous grumbling in my stomach. I decided to turn around after about 5 miles, this canyon goes onward. When I could see more sky once more dark clouds building, much more serious than the previous day. A good time to get out of these narrow canyons. I pointed the Toyota south, one more thing to do, and it was on my way home-- |
