| no partners | | From the South Block I drove to Hanksville then up to Boulder and over on the Burr Trail to the Wolverine Loop road. This is an area I had hiked in years ago, didn't remember a lot about it only that it was nice, and not very busy. These west side canyons of the Escalante don't get the hiking pressure the ones off the Hole in the Rock road do.
I decided to go down Wolverine, down Horse canyon, camp somewhere in there. Photograph the narrows in LDH (Little Death Hollow) and go to the river and back. Just a leisurely overnight.
Wolverine is a nice Wingate walled canyon with some nice walls, some huge undercuts, and lots of petrified wood, courtesy of the Chinle formation in the upper canyons here. I was hoping LDH was dry, I have been thru when it's a little wet and it was a big pain, and I was a muddy mess afterword.
The hiking is very easy, the canyon slowly narrows down a little and the wingate walls slowly come down and embrace the canyon floor. Horse canyon comes as a shock, it's huge and dry and has a current vehicle track to a line shack in it. About a mile down the water starts running and the line shack and a huge cottonwood grove mark the end of vehicle access. The canyon is tighter and much nicer after this area also. I camped on a shallow sandy bench with a little overhang with huge cottonwoods hanging over. I was near the mouth of LDH for the next day. I dropped my pack but went on down to the Escalante, running swift and clear with the last of the snow meltoff.
I did my thing the next day at Little Death Hollow, then out Wolverine, a lot easier with a pack. |
