Day off, where are the good storms---south!!! Looks like it had been raining pretty well in Nogales area so off I went. I love walking in the rain. I knew it would be good when the first small wash was a wet footed crossing for the Jeep, with big pools down stream. 5 water crossings later at the corral. I bounded down the canyon, water, water everywhere. Yes it was chocolate rich red brown but it was glorious, plentiful, running water. I scrambled down above the first big pool carefully,it was really full now. Had to wade mid calf off the high bypass. Hurried to the Hellsgate, starting to thunder and rain. The second pool had been inundated and I had to take another high bypass. Tricky getting out the end of the Hellsgate, had to wade and scramble as it was water wall to wall. The flood/rain water was warm. It has crested probably last night as plenty of slimy mud and debris higher on the banks. I took a little no name canyon out as it was raining more. I stopped in an alcove to get geared up and saw some more faded crude stick figures from long ago. Covered the pack, covered the cameras and deployed the umbrella. The small canyon is an illegal immigrant route, I found several lay up areas full of trash but no one around. In a narrow spot I was defeated by a deep pool and chockstone, I probed with my poles but too deep for me without water proof camera boxes.
Up and around. Nice views. Down again, nice hiking then a short rough big boulder section, with a hawk screaming at me, near the nest I suppose, to be defeated yet again by a pool and small waterfall!! I put my big girl panties on and climbed straight up 15 feet and traversed smashed against the rock, holding onto roots, whatever and using toe holds or side smearing my feet to make it past. The rain let up, now it was humid as heck. I followed the canyon out to the road that goes to the Bartolo mtns area well past the corral. Road walk back long but pretty in oak groves with light rain. Another hawk started screaming and diving at me then got beat up by 4 small birds aggressively attacking it. I saw a very large nest up a tree as I walked by. Well it took forever but good views what I could see, getting socked in and hard rain. I was a little worried on driving out, but I really don't sweat it unless the water's up to the headlights. However did get the Jeep wet on the drive out and AC seems to have conked out on it, got the battery etc all wet. Fun, fun, fun!!!
