Funny how my memory does not work sometimes. Like at all. This canyon is a case in point. I remembered sort of a petroglyph panel near the river as you enter the canyon. It's a pretty nice panel, and guess what, has some FEET in it. Animal though I think. I didn't remember any details, has some nice sheep, possibly turkey tracks and some of the weird space alien type figures.
I had a nice camp in a big alcove with spring water right there. My boots dried out from the river wading and it was a pretty warm night. That evening I hiked up the non technical end of south or east Choprock, a very pretty little canyon with pools and a nice pour over and pool where the canyoneering folks do their final rappel. It was peaceful with all the frogs etc. The next day I started hiking out. I totally spaced the long narrows in Choprock too. Really long, some open areas but consistently narrow. As it starts to open some springs running in a subway like area, very pretty. Years ago I had camped at the confluence with the main canyon and the west fork. This area is idyllic with water, big walls, boulders, trees, just magical.
I topped off with water here although I planned to hike on out. Never know what can happen.
The farther up Choprock you go it becomes dry and big and open. I took the correct fork this time. It was getting pretty hot and no shade as I marched up the huge canyon. I located the uranium mining road near the canyon head which would take me up and along the divide between the prow dividing Choprock from Silver Falls Creek on one side and the huge Colt Mesa on the other.
Nice views into the dry bed of the Moody canyon systems. I had already gone through almost 3 litres of water. I was not overheating though. I took a couple of shade breaks in the trees at the saddle. The mining road loops around and drops you by a corral which can be a TH in Silver Falls Creek. Of course my car was still several miles down the road. I dropped my pack, quite glad to be rid of it and off the infernal mining road in this heat. I dumped my remaining water on my head and quickly got to the car. Drove out to a car camp site not too far off the pavement, big clouds and wind building, looked stormy but not sure if it would come my way or not. These clay based roads are not good to fool around with if wet. What to do the next day???
