Nothing like that triple digits in the valley mind you, but with no shade to speak of like Sombrero Peak had the sun beating down on us made for the usual complaints... from Tracey anyway.
On the way up we saw enough Javelina scat to convince us this was in fact 'Hog' Mountain. Although we saw much evidence, we saw no wildlife on this mountain at all. When we reached what appeared to be some 400' from the mapped summit Tracey found a summit log with the last entry from 2003. Since this may have been a false summit we continued to the spot listed on maps as the high point but it not only yielded nothing, it was some 10' lower than where we found the log so that's what I set as the waypoint for the summit.
Once back to the trail head I drove the Samurai and Tracey drove the Pathfinder to the campsite we had picked out earlier in the day. This was Tracey's first taste of four-wheeling as a driver, and as it turns out over the rest of the weekend she will not only rack up a bunch of miles but will do an excellent job of tackling some of the toughest terrain I'd expect to drive the Pathfinder through myself. Ok, so she managed to triple the amount and depth of 'Arizona pinstripes' on the Pathfinder, but it would have been no different if anyone else had been driving, that's just how bad it was. You'll have to wait for my last triplog/photoset of this weekend for a glimpse at the 'damage'.
With both vehicles at our campsite we decided on-the-spur-of-the-moment to skip setting up the tent and sleep in the Pathfinder. That way we'd be able to get an early start on the second day of our adventure.
After supper we took in a short walk to see if we could find anything of interest. As the sun dropped to the horizon the smoke from various fires treated us with a colorful series of sunset views which I tried to catch with the camera... would have been nice if I had the tripod instead of leaving it in the car.
Still, I think they turned out pretty decent as can be seen in the last seven photos of this set:
