| partners | | With triple digits forecast in the valley we wanted something a bit cooler yet not a long drive to the rim (and possibly deal with smoke) so we settled for Pinal Peak.
The plan was Icehouse Canyon Trail down until it connected with the Telephone Trail which we'd take for our return to the top. But when we pulled in at the start of Icehouse there were some people camped right there so we decided to drive a little way past them before starting our hike. Unfortunately, thinking the road was part of the trail, by time we started off, it would have meant walking back up to the actual TH, so we decided to continue down along what turned out to be the old Telephone Ridge Road. Then instead of coming back up the Telephone Trail over to Six Shooter we returned via the Icehouse Canyon Trail to make a counter-clockwise loop instead of the planned clockwise one.
But no matter, it was a nice cool day and we enjoyed ourselves... until we began the steep return trip. Almost 1600' elevation gain up in barely 2 miles was a real pumpkin-kicker. Tracey said enough after the hike, but I wasn't going to leave it at one |
