I went to Peridot and got my permit for the hike. I drove in on Road 600, then took Road 610 to where I parked, at the junction of road 610 and road 703. A crossover SUV should be able to drive on Road 600, but a high clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended for road 610.
I walked on the road for about 3.5 miles, and then went up a ridgeline to near the base of some imposing cliff bands. Then I traversed below the cliff bands to the south to a saddle. From the saddle it was an easy hike above the cliff bands to the summit. I might have been able to find a class 2 or class 3 weakness in the cliff bands to climb up, but the route I took kept the hike at class 1.
It was a nice summit with unobstructed 360 degree views. Low clouds kept me from seeing the very top of Mount Turnbull and Pinal Peak though.
There were 2 benchmarks at the summit -- one was stamped "Blair" and the other did not have a name stamped on it. Both reference marks were stamped "Blair".
I descended the way that I came up.
I enjoyed this hike, even if most of it was on a road. The area is scenic, and if you like solitude you'll almost certainly find it out here. This is probably the 10th peak that I have hiked/climbed on the San Carlos Reservation, and I have yet to see another human on a hike there. |
