With the hot weather on the way I decided it was time for more heat acclimatizing in preparation for my hiking, four-wheeling and biking in the heat. So I filled my CamelBak and set off for a long ride expecting to complete it about the time the sun was at its peak.
Another reason for a long ride is I hoped to work out the 'hard spot' in the muscle behind my left shin from the red ant bite two days ago. Unfortunately even a 2-1/2 hour workout didn't make any difference, the muscle is still very hard in an area about 2" in diameter. Although I was bitten by a half-dozen at once 4-5 years ago, they were all on the feet and ankles and although every bit as painful for more than a week, they didn't seem to affect any muscles. (I suppose that may be due to much more muscle and tissue in the leg than the ankle.)
I started at Prospector Park in Apache Junction and meandered about between Lost Dutchman Rd and McKellips before heading north on Hackamore Road and into Bulldog OHV Area. Once in Bulldog I began on FR3512, crossed over to FR1356, following it west, again passing FR3512. I continued on FR1356 all the way around to FR10, passing the Rock House along the way. Exiting Bulldog at the Tomahawk gate I wound my way back out to McKellips, which I took all the way west to Meridian. From there I went south on Meridian a half-mile before passing through the gate into the area on either side of the diversion channel and power lines. I meandered around for some time before crossing Ironwood and doing the same along the way back to Prospector Park on Idaho.
It was a good solid workout with some pretty good climbs so I was a bit surprised I drank barely more than 32 oz of my Gatorade. It probably helped there was a pretty good breeze so it felt cooler than it was. The only stops I made were to lift my bike through the gates and for a couple photos along the way.
With gas still a budgetary issue for me I'll probably do more biking like this between hikes. |
