Wanted to get away someplace cool for my weekend and decided that the Pinalenos were way cool with probably less people this week and weekend. I decided to combine my Car Camping with a Scenic Drive of the Swift Trail to combine some of the photos taken on the drives back and forth on the Swift Trail.

Left Wednesday night after work and made it up to Roper Lake State Park a little after dark. Chad met up with me there to go over our plans for the next two days and then went home to pack his gear. Just before he left, we got a visit from a couple of Raccoons, but once they realized they weren't getting any food, they left. We did recognize one of them from the month before, as it had the bad right eye... :)

Chad had warned me that the area was under a Red Flag warning for a High Wind Advisory for the next four days, but the wind had almost died by sunset. It was pretty warm trying to sleep in the car that night and I ended up not sleeping at all. Took a walk around the Lake around 10:30 using the red light on my headlamp. It was a little spooky, but nice. Saw a Kangaroo Rat and a bunch of Cottontail Rabbits, but that was all. Still restless and unable to sleep at 1:30 a.m., I sat up in the car just in time to see three Raccoons walk across the campsite, but they didn't hang around either.

At 3:00 a.m., I heard a noise right next to the car. I had set my cooler next to the car, up against the back bumper. It was pretty much right at my feet, as I always leave the back hatch open when I sleep. I sat up and leaned forward and saw the silhouette of a head at the back corner of the car, looking in at me!!! :o  I do believe it was our young friend that was such a ham for the camera a month ago. Small, but very curious and cute! :kf: I think from the sound I heard and where he was located initially, he had been trying to get in the cooler. Anyway, I guess he decided to stick around and ham it up for the camera again. He was sooo curious that at a couple of points, I actually thought he was going to jump into the car!! :stop: [-X I'm sure he probably smelled the bag of food that I had in the car as well....Got some pretty cute shots. If I didn't know Raccoons, I would have taken this guy home, he is sooo cute!!! He finally left about a half hour later, but returned a couple of more times before dawn, however, his return visits were brief.

At 4:30 a.m., I gave up trying to sleep, realized that it was almost "safe light", and decided to try and see if there was any Topwater action going on with the Bass. Got up, rigged my poles and took off on foot to the spot where I had had good luck last month. 3rd cast and Bam! Woohoo! Another fish on Topwater!!! This one went about 2 1/2 lbs. I think it was a "she". Long and skinny, like a Bass that has just gotten done spawning. No witnesses this time, but I did take a pic.... :y:

Fished another hour with no luck so hiked back to the car and got ready to go. Chad showed up and away we went, up to the Mountain. It was getting pretty breezy again, and by a little later in the morning, it was getting pretty windy.

After a day of hiking, and taking a few Wildflower pictures at Chesley Flat, we settled on camping the night at Riggs Lake. We got to the campground and surprisingly, it already had quite a few people there, for a Thursday night. I guess alot of people were taking an extended vacation with the Holiday. The wind was still going pretty good and it was cold!!! It finally died down a little and we got a nice little campfire going to take the chill off. Chad had brought up some Juniper that he had acquired, and I'll tell you, what a great wood to burn! It doesn't pop, crackle or throw sparks at all, so it was a good choice of wood for a campfire!!!! Chad had a tent, and I slept in the car again, but this time, I shut the hatch just because of how cold it was!! I think I finally passed out and since I couldn't hear anything going on outside, I slept late. By the time I woke up, Chad had already done a few laps around the Lake!!

Got up, got packed and did another very cool day of Hiking!!! It got very very windy today and it was actually problematic on a couple of hikes, but we managed....Took some Sunset pictures on the way down the Swift Trail, dropped Chad off at his truck at Roper Lake State Park and took off for home about 9:00 P.M. Just outside of Thatcher, I tried very hard to imprint a couple of Javelina on my front bumper, but luckily, they split up in the middle of the road and somehow I missed them both!!! Left a little rubber on the pavement though.... :o The rest of the drive was uneventful, other than having to stop and put everything back in the back seat.... That little near miss definitely kept me awake for the rest of the trip home....

Another great outing down in the Southeast!!! I can see, that budget allowing, this is going to become a semi-regular weekend escape for me!!! Thanks for another fun filled adventure Chad!!!
