The Battle of Cegar was in the mid to late 1800s. The Turks were beating the Serbs during a huge in this area and as a final act of defiance, the Serbian leader/general Stevan Sindjilic exploded a huge gun powder magazine killing everyone, Turks and Serbs.
As an act of deterrance from this happening again, the Turks cuts the heads of the Serb corpses, and built a tower along the main travel and trade route through the city and put the heads all over it. This is now one of the main historical sites to see in Nis, along with Mediana. |
