| no partners | | For our second day in Flagstaff I wanted to hike somewhere near the Kachina Peaks but wasn't really sure where. The Schultz Tank and Little Elden Trails seemed to be nice and flat and thru the pines. But once we to to the TH for Little Elden, most of that area was still burned out from a recent forest fire. We drove further on to the Schultz Tank TH and started there. We hiked over the the next trailhead, looked at the maps, and decided to head up the Sunset Trail until the kids got tired or the climb got too steep.
This trail turned out to be absolutely perfect. It was a climb, but not too much. Just enough to add some more exercise and make a shorter hike a good workout. and it was also alot thicker with vegetation, giving a nice contrast to the dried up desert right now. and of course, the views of the San Franscisco (Kachina) peaks were awesome.
We made it up to the saddle/ridgeline and while Radmila and the kids took a rest, I hiked the spur trail up to the little peak and back. On our way back we saw more hikers and bikers than on our way up as it was getting later in the morning. Dmitri has been watching alot of Diego lately on Nickelodeon so he greeted everyone with a hearty "O-LA!!" every time someone said hi. One hiker we saw was a mom with her approximately 1 year old on her back. On their way down, she let him out to do a little walking on his own. And I thought I was getting my kids started early.
Afterwards we hit Alpine Pizza for lunch which hit the spot perfectly. The trip down I-17 was very easy since it was only a Sunday . We were home before 5pm and had extra time to hang with the neighbors and their Memorial Day party whilst I imbibed in the 6-pack of Alaskan Black IPA I discovered at the Shell station at the Kachina Blvd exit on I-17. Perfect end to a perfect weekend. |
