At one or two of the junctions, however, we ended up turning left and ended up on the unofficial trail that parallels the Massacre Grounds trail and heads towards the Praying Hands. I didn't know exactly what this was until I got home and checked it out on HAZ (thanks again, Joe).
After the last trail junction, the wide open trail began to narrow and get a little steeper. For me this was barely noticeable, but for my kids it quickly became a small challenge. They got used to it quick enough, however, and we made our way almost to the end of the trail. At the first big rock formation is where we took our break and the kids crawled up through the crevice and looped back to our resting spot in the shade.
The way back down wasn't as hard as I was afraid it might be for Dmitri. He's getting better with steeper downhill sections now. There was a noticeable improvement from today and last December trying to walk down the Cave Trail.
The temps were very nice, not too hot like they will be in another month. the breezes helped alot with that. the scenery here is really nice for how close this is to town. Nice to get the kids out for a short hike and keep them interested in hiking. |
