Took the asphalt path to the dirt road which leads to powerlines.
Rocky, bouncy, dippy road - I was having alot of fun ...
Then I came upon some puddles and noticed cat tracks - larger, fresher, and more numerous than I've seen before.
This is the second time that I have had a bad feeling about lions in this exact same area, so even though I would like to ride more of this dirt road, I don't think I'll be doing it alone.
I never used to worry so much about cats around Phoenix - even though I actually saw two of them there - so I am not sure why I'm more cautious now.
Partly I guess because of a generally wary attitude about them here - more than one person has warned me ... Also because it's obviously prime lion hunting territory, with the abundance of deer and elk - though that should mean the lions are well-fed, and have no reason to look to humans as prey, right? ... And today, I was concious of the fact that a lone person on a bike looks an awfully lot like fleeing prey to a cat - several of the attacks I have read about (not here!) were on mountain bikers.
I'm told that all lions in the area are tagged and tracked - maybe I should go talk to a Ranger who knows about them, and find out if I should be so worried. I've never heard of an attack on humans here, so I probably shouldn't be that concerned. |
