My first Grand Canyon summit! :y:
After years of wishing (I first learned about this hike in a 2007 issue of Az Highways) and months of eager anticipation (since I arrived here and first layed eyes on it) Nick and I were able to get together on a day off and bag the Battleship.
I was seen off from the Maswik parking lot by several groups of deer, and met Nick at the TH at 8am. We reached 1.5 mile at 8:32, and 2 mile corner at 8:46. We were pleasantly surprised by the small amount of people on the trail.
We looked at the high route, leaving directly from the corner, and went down the trail 100-150 feet or so to where I (correctly, it turns out) believed the low route started ... we spotted a cairn up higher so we took the high route ... this route is easy enough to follow, but definitely has alot more ups and downs. We returned on the lower route, and it was so much easier and nicer. Returning on the lower route took us about a half an hour less than going out on the high route - and the exposure mentioned was no big deal at all.
After nearly an hour and a half, we reached the saddle and had our first break.
From saddle to summit took 50 minutes.
The climbing was super fun! We took the wrong - much harder - route up the first climb ... both lost some skin from our knees to that one! After thrashing up it, I looked over the other side and found the easy way - I went down that way when it was time, but Nick choose to go back down the way we went up.
Next we walked throught the narrow "hallway" under a chockstone ... then up the small chimney portion - which I really enjoyed. Couple more small climbs and some zig-zagging up and across ledges, and we topped out - WooHoo!
Signed the summit log, took some pics, had snacks ... 42 minute break.
Summit back to saddle took 37 mins.
Back to 2 mile took 52 more.
From 2 mile to 1.5 was 16 mins ... 1.5 to top was 48 mins, taking it easy.
Great day - thanks for joining me, Nick!
Lost: One trekking pole.
Found: One G.C. map bandanna. One nalgene water bottle (left in place).
