Leaving Phoenix around 6:30 AM Sunday morning we (one roommate, myself, and three dogs :y: ) headed for the rim. The intention was to start at the Pinchot Cabin parking area and do the loop. After arriving at the turnoff for General Springs we decided we had driven far enough. Strapped our packs on, strapped two packs on the dogs and hit the Rim Road. :PMIC: Our departure time was 8:30AM.

Following the road to Houston Brothers we headed North with the intention of catching the Barbershop Trail junction. After a while walking we decided we had somehow missed the junction (we were using a Coconino area map, and two iphones with the HAZ Cabin Loop page saved, and no GPS because mine retired the day before :out: ). After coming to this conclusion we decided to backtrack nearly to the Rim Road and intercepted FR 139. After awhile walking again, we were beginning to think we missed the junction again and debated just doing the West loop. We decided to press on for five more minutes and if nothing appeared we would turn around and abandoned our plan on doing the East loop. Luck would have it that we found the junction (easily marked, even the blind could find it :sl: ).

We headed down Barbershop trail towards uncharted waters (for us at least). The trail was easy to follow and ironically was marked with orange and blue ribbon (we would later learn that a trail running group would be holding an event at the end of the month and had pre-marked the route). Running dry around Dane's cabin, we refilled and pressed on. It should be noted there were multiple locations for filterable water on Barbershop before the cabin. But the spring at Dane's cabin didn't require filtering (IMO).

After a long hike we arrived at our camp spot for the evening. Pinchot springs. Our feet were sore as were the dogs and the camping at this site is ideal. Some fellow hikers even managed to leave us suitable firewood :worthy: . We bagged our food after dark and hung it (last year at this campsite my group watched a bear walk past the sign-in book area just before dark). After the long day we bedded down. Sometime around midnight the dogs or an animal, or me, or my roommate startled all of us. I woke up, screamed like a pansy :guilty: (at least one of us did), yelled for the dogs to lay back down and began flashing our lights around attempting to find the cause of the disturbance. No luck. :-s Besides an elevated heart rate and jumping up so fast that I nailed my leg on a stump, no one was injured.

Somebody's alarm went off at 4:30AM and we began the day. After awhile taking pictures and getting organized we headed out. Today only held 6.5 miles. :y: My feet were still tired from the day before and two of the dogs were a little tender footed :stretch: . A quick two hours and we returned to the car at......wait for it....8:30AM. Not bad for a 24 hour backpacking trip. :wlift:
