I did this loop back in 2013 in May. It was a good backpack and nice to get out of the heat that was starting to creep up in Phoenix. From the TH, we started on Fred Haught to General Springs Cabin. From there, instead of taking the General Crook Trail, we just hiked a section of the Rim Road to hook up to Houston Brothers trail. There were good spots to set up camp on both Fred Haught and Houston Bros. If you want to make it a longer trip, loop over to Barbershop and then U-Bar. Typical Payson pine forests - very pretty.
