| partners | | This is my favorite kid mini-hike in the McDowells. We drive 0.4 miles from our house to the 104th Street parking lot (don't want to burn out or hit our peak with toddlers before we even touch the trail!!) Then we take 104th St to Levee Trail then hobble along on that miserable freakin' trail to Crossover - then we go left to the Brown's Ranch Ruins (instead of most people would go right at the fork to get up to Gateway trail.
Caroline can hike this whole thing by herself and then we "picnic" at the play house ranch ruins. We pretend there's a kitchen and we have a snack and then play a little. George rides on my back as usual. He's not ready for independent hiking.... yet!
There was a cactus incident - Caroline got two spurs in her hand and there was a brief moment of screeching and screaming more out of panic than actual pain. Then a few tears and an attempt to get me to carry her back to the parking lot. It's possible for me to carry two kids but only from burning flames - not for a cactus meltdown! So we said a prayer for strength - and she pulled herself together and made it back on her own to the car. Very proud of her tough girl spirit!! We celebrated all evening and the next day at school telling all her friends about how she survived a cactus encounter on her big hike!! |
