1st trip
Today was a "date hike" day on Valentine's Day with hubby. Kids in preschool - we dropped them off then raced to get started knowing we had to pick up around 3pm for ballet. Luckily we started at the 104th parking lot not even a half a mile from the house.

We went COUNTER clockwise for our first time on this loop that I have been dying to do since having a newborn when AlHikesAZ first wrote this up. I remember thinking that once the new Mommy "fog" lifted that I would be out there with my light-weight, easy infant to hike this new loop on my maternity leave. Ha!! Light-weight, yes - easy, no! We even tried to do this loop last year on one of our spring date hike days, but George got sick and we ended up doing the smallest possible loop in the McDowells on Levee and Paradise. Was disappointing but par-for-the-course in our parenting lives.

So to finally complete this frickin' loop was quite a joy! To be in good enough shape to do it in pretty darn good time for a middle aged Mom - and going counter clockwise and back over Gateway Saddle (instead of the lower part of Gateway Loop) - was just amazing. Happy Freakin' Valentine's Day to ME! I love you, McDowells!! :budrose: :budrose: (and the hubby too :D ) I love this loop - love living close to these mountains - love the weather today - love hardly seeing any people on most of the hike - love that we got in a double-digit hike without any kid disaster phone call - love The Thumb and the incredible views up there.

Stay away from Gateway loop near the main trailhead - and you avoid a whole lot of human contact. Hardly anyone is on Levee/crossover - and way more people go out and back along Gateway then cross the saddle.

So the last stretch of Levee is flat but bumpy and my quads have a quiver in them - and we've got to get home in time to clean up before ballet. Quick tub soak combined with ibuprofen and diet Coke ... now ready to shuttle kids to activities. Old life colliding with new life. It's all good. Especially on a day with 13.3 miles in it :GB:
