Ord from that old road (pointing to it as we drive by) and he asks if I'd be up for giving it a try sometime. Sure! I say, without giving it a second thought (or without having read any previous trip reports )
We decide upon Sunday, and as we're driving North on the Beeline we see quite a bit of snow near the top of Mt. Ord. We arrived at the trailhead about 8:30AM, temps in the high 30's (or was it 40? a bit chilly whatever it was) and began our hike up...and up...and up. I warmed up quickly. Interesting remnants of the old mines, and all the different colors and piles of slate were pretty amazing, combined with the outstanding views, I really enjoyed this hike!
But I must say, there is no relief on this trail, it just goes UP all the way to the top! We were making pretty good time, at least for the first 5-6 miles, then the legs really started to feel it. What a welcomed relief to reach that 1/2 mile sign (although, that was the longest 1/2 mile ever!) Rejuvenated by lunch we headed back down, the snow a little slushier/muddier by now, but the sun was out and the temps had warmed..life was good. Check that one off the to-do list! |
